Louisiana has a laundry list of issues that, as of June 2025, has the state ranked last in the [U.S. News & World Report’s list of “best states.”](https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/louisiana?ref=newsouthernrevolt.mymagic.page#state-rankings)

When Louisiana’s ranking is broken down into 8 individual categories, we’re ranked last in “Crime & Corrections” and “Education”; and 46th in most “Opportunity.” Louisiana’s highest category ranking was in “Health Care,” with a ranking of 44 out of all 50 states.

But instead of addressing these issues, the state’s Governor, Jeff Landry, is hard at work joining in on the GOP’s war on democracy.

On [August 18th it was announced](https://www.wwltv.com/article/news/local/la-national-guard-joins-law-enforcement-in-washington-dc/289-406d697c-ac07-4840-b97d-58774e2817c3?ref=newsouthernrevolt.mymagic.page) that 135 Louisiana National Guard troops were sent to Washington DC over the weekend, joining in with [Mississippi, Tennessee, South Carolina, Ohio, and West Virginia](https://www.newsweek.com/map-states-sending-national-guard-dc-2115388?ref=newsouthernrevolt.mymagic.page). The six states will account for about 1,100 troops on the ground in DC, adding to the [800 already there](https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/5459043-states-send-troops-trump-dc/?ref=newsouthernrevolt.mymagic.page), participating alongside 10 federal agencies in occupying the city. The six GOP-led states sent in the troops at the request of Donald Trump, who took control of the Capital's police department about 10 days ago in order to crack down on a non-existent crime problem, in a city that has seen [a 30 year low in violent crime rate](https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/pr/violent-crime-dc-hits-30-year-low?ref=newsouthernrevolt.mymagic.page). According to [Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/world/us/more-republican-governors-send-national-guard-washington-backing-trump-2025-08-19/?ref=newsouthernrevolt.mymagic.page), in those nearly two weeks, 465 arrests have been made, with an average of 39 arrests a day. In comparison, Washington DC's Metropolitan Police Department arrested 61 adults and juveniles a day in 2024.

Governor Jeff Landry [said in a Twitter/X post](https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/landry-pledges-louisiana-national-guard-105901884.html?guccounter=1&guce%5Freferrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce%5Freferrer%5Fsig=AQAAAMwpGEcErqgb5RPK%5Fulsaj3eeslhUyP6qEOJDkoMie7pDI-mw6iYbr6ivun%5FvDePYIBQ5EgTnFhJ8BpfLOFAaqU-Zsf8NQhqGX90jioKd0enWNWCOXJND-5862b%5FvonXjOVKkW9xxlJi2EKOsv%5FEP%5F5V32evD2%5FzpvCtov6JEBNq&ref=newsouthernrevolt.mymagic.page), “We are a nation of law and order. Our capital is a reflection of our nation’s respect, beauty, and standards... We cannot allow our cities to be overcome by violence and lawlessness. I am proud to support this mission to return safety and sanity to Washington DC and cities all across our country, including right here in Louisiana.”

Despite Landry's authorization it's unclear what authority the Louisiana National Guard would have while in DC, but it stands to reason they'd be working alongside ICE, who has shown an increasing ire for the communities they claim to want to protect. Recent footage has shown agents violently [detaining a delivery driver](https://www.kvue.com/article/news/local/federal-officers-arrest-uber-eats-driver-delivering-a-lunch-ice-agents-trump-takeover/65-cd4efb51-1911-4dff-8a77-26357db91479?ref=newsouthernrevolt.mymagic.page). The footage shows the delivery driver being tazed by one agent, while 5 more masked-goons piled-on. The agents repeatedly punched the driver in the head, and a [bystander yelled](https://newrepublic.com/article/199263/federal-agents-dc-takeover-proud-boys-far-right-violence?ref=newsouthernrevolt.mymagic.page) for the officers to “get the fuck out of this city,” right before asking “why are you guys here?”

Another bystander chimed in with “You guys are ruining the country.”

One of the several agents [shot-back](https://www.thehandbasket.co/p/federal-agent-dc-violent-arrest-delivery-worker-video?ref=newsouthernrevolt.mymagic.page) with, “Liberals already ruined it.”

In essence, the agencies that are supposed to protect the American people [have turned against](https://newrepublic.com/article/199263/federal-agents-dc-takeover-proud-boys-far-right-violence?ref=newsouthernrevolt.mymagic.page) the American people, and Governor Landry is eager to get Louisiana’s troops into the fray.

Adding to the plethora of issues that come along with the sending of Louisiana's troops to DC is that Landry authorized the use of the National Guard while we're in the midst of hurricane season. This comes at a time when, due to climate change, hurricanes are [getting increasingly stronger](https://www.edf.org/climate/how-climate-change-makes-hurricanes-more-destructive?ref=newsouthernrevolt.mymagic.page) at a [rapid rate](https://www.cnn.com/2025/08/16/weather/hurricane-erin-track-strengthening-atlantic-climate?ref=newsouthernrevolt.mymagic.page#:~:text=Even%20more%20hurricanes%20are%20rapidly,the%20global%20warming%20it%20causes.). Most recently, [Hurricane Erin](https://www.cnn.com/2025/08/16/weather/hurricane-erin-track-strengthening-atlantic-climate?ref=newsouthernrevolt.mymagic.page#:~:text=Even%20more%20hurricanes%20are%20rapidly,the%20global%20warming%20it%20causes.) went from a Category 1 with 75 mph winds just before noon on Friday August 15th, to a category 5 with nearly 160 mph winds 24 hours later. Hurricane Erin has since slowed to a Category 2 and tracking models show Louisiana should be spared, with the [hurricane drifting towards](https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/weather/2025/08/20/hurricane-erin-projected-path-spaghetti-models/85737022007/?ref=newsouthernrevolt.mymagic.page) the Bahamas, Bermuda, the U.S. East Coast, and Atlantic Canada. However, the National Hurricane Center is tracking 2 other systems in the Atlantic, with one of them likely to become a tropical depression.

Trump made it clear that other Democrat-controlled cities will likely be occupied by the federal government after DC, which put some [Black leaders in other cities on high alert](https://www.politico.com/news/2025/08/12/black-cities-mayors-trump-dc-takeover-00505773?ref=newsouthernrevolt.mymagic.page), as the cities Trump has lambasted all are led by Black officials. But the excuse of crime doesn't hold up to reality. In fact, several Black mayors [saw crime fall dramatically](https://apnews.com/article/black-mayors-national-guard-police-takeover-dc-aa9a9cd07f0704b13f3d2deb2e351e44?ref=newsouthernrevolt.mymagic.page) in their respective cities. Another thing making the “crime” excuse moot is that [64 cities within the 6 states](https://www.pbump.net/o/more-people-in-ohio-need-protection-from-violent-crime-than-do-people-in-d-c/?s=&utm%5Fsource=substack&utm%5Fmedium=email) that sent troops to occupy DC have higher violent crime rates than DC, with crime data showing [New Orleans to be ](https://www.newsweek.com/map-cities-homicide-rates-crime-2112196?ref=newsouthernrevolt.mymagic.page)ranked number 3 on the list. Whether or not New Orleans is on a list of cities to be occupied has yet to be announced.

Even in the event of New Orleans’ occupation, it's fair to say that the people of Louisiana would show up in large numbers to rebuke this overreach, if the staggering number of people who marched during the [No Kings Day protests](https://lailluminator.com/2025/06/14/new-orleans-no-kings/?ref=newsouthernrevolt.mymagic.page) are any indication. It stands to reason that the people of Louisiana will be (or at least should be) emboldened by the display of resistance in DC. Footage on social media has shown large groups of citizens [running ICE out of their neighborhoods](https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:3le7dvxqc2rhvyswiida2cgf/post/3lws5rjdmcs2i?ref=newsouthernrevolt.mymagic.page) and heckling and [filming](https://bsky.app/profile/simon.overgrown.garden/post/3lweulgxqes2b?ref=newsouthernrevolt.mymagic.page) them. One brave resister in a video posted to [BlueSky](https://bsky.app/profile/noturtlesoup17.bsky.social/post/3lwqbqmtk7s2n?ref=newsouthernrevolt.mymagic.page) called-out law enforcement for wearing masks, saying “Must be real proud of your job if you can’t show your face.”

In all, in the event New Orleans does one day become occupied, the lesson we should all take from the resistance the citizens of DC have shown thus far is that when the occupiers are challenged, they will run away. It’s a sign that they know they don’t have the numbers to control us all. In fact, that logic extends outside the realm of city occupation. The far-right does not have a mandate, and can be defeated. It’s just time for all citizens of America to realize that truth as well, so that more people can join in on the fight for democracy, and we can toss this nightmarish chapter of our nation’s story into the waste bin of history.
