What is “New Southern Revolt?”

"Southern revolt" is a term that can harken back to an era of the Confederacy: white folks who hated Black people so much they were willing to die for their cause. It could invoke the imagery of gaggles of people in white robes waiting around a burning cross under the moonlight, talking about how the South shall rise again.

But I (Danny Cherry Jr.) named this newsletter New Southern Revolt because I want to reclaim the imagery of a southern revolution from the bigots who once claimed it, and wrest control of the idea for those of us who want Louisiana and the South writ-large to move in a more progressive direction.

This newsletter will be a mix of short-form reporting, for when there's something I want to briefly bring to your attention; and long-form features, for when I want to get really in the weeds on a topic. I will focus on Louisiana, but will keep an eye on larger trends happening in politics across the South.

My bio:

I’m Danny Cherry Jr., and by day, I'm a MBA-havin', caffeine-addicted office drone. But by night, I'm a novelist, short story writer, essayist, and local journalist based in Louisiana. I’m a frequent contributor to Antigravity Magazine, and have written for: Buzzfeed News, Politico, The Daily Beast, Gambit (NOLA), the Lens, and more. I've also published fiction for Apex Magazine, Fiyah Lit Mag, amongst others.

I was selected for the New Orleans 40 under 40, class 2025, and I also wrote a crime novel based in 1920s NOLA. It’s pretty good, so says reviewers.
